Kansas Prairie Fields by Karen Matheis
Five new exhibitions open at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery on Sunday, August 3, and continue through October 19. They feature Practical In Her Art: Women Artists of the 1930s; paintings by Karen Matheis of Lawrence, prints by Juana Estrada Hernandez of Providence, Rhode Island; mixed media works by Harley Elliott of Salina; and Swedish art from the Gallery’s permanent collection. A reception for the exhibitions will be on Sunday, August 4, 2:00-4:00pm, with exhibition talks beginning at 2:30pm.
For the exhibition Practical In Her Art: Women Artists of the 1930s, curators around the state have collaborated to highlight the careers of key Kansas women artists and the progress they made enlarging the field. The show includes work by Mary Huntoon, Margaret Whittemore, Avis Chitwood, Sue Jean Covacevich, Clara Hatton, Norma Bassett Hall, and Anna Keener.
Karen Matheis’ exhibition, Constructive Landscape, explores the reinterpretation of the Midwest landscape with a focus of human interaction with nature.
Juana Estrada Hernandez' exhibition, Nuestras Historias (Our Stories), utilizes her experiences growing up in the US to create prints that addresses social and political problems surrounding her migrant communities.
Harley Elliott will be exhibiting mixed media pieces from his Ally series.
The final exhibition honors Lindsborg’s biennial Svensk Hyllningsfest celebration, happening this year on October 17 & 18, by having an exhibition of Swedish and Sweden American art from its permanent collection.

Another 5-star review for a Lindsborg lodging option! A recent Lindsborg guest and her extended family messaged Visit Lindsborg with wonderful comments about their recent unplanned visit to Lindsborg. The great part: this extended family numbered 9, and they were all able to stay in one Lindsborg rental!
"(We) had planned on meeting up for a weekend camping trip at lake Kanopolis. We got there a day early and realized it was going to be miserable camping, super windy and HOT! So we very last minute decided to figure out a plan B option. We decided plan B was going to be Lindsborg. We found a great VRBO that fit all 9 of us perfectly and had everything we needed. First we enjoyed one of the best cups of coffee ever at the Blacksmith Coffee Shop & Roastery, then great Chinese food for lunch. Then we killed some time waiting to check in to the VRBO, and learned a lot of Lindsborg history at Lindsborg Old Mill & Swedish Heritage Museum. Tisha was our VRBO host and got us checked in a tad early and was so helpful in this last minute booking. We hit White's Foodliner and after supper we all went out to Barnyard Creamery and had a fun and tasty snack there. Saturday morning we hit nearly every single shop downtown. Each of the store owners/clerks were amazingly welcoming and friendly. We shopped and picked up quite a few items downtown. Several of us rented out the bikes, and we took the only grandchild to the Viking Village park and played and played. What a fun park for children. We even hit up the Farmers Market and got jelly. Even the TACOL Thrift Store is amazing! Clean, well-organized and once again welcoming and friendly staff. After supper on Saturday we walked to the snow cone shack (Lindsborg TropicalSno) and spent our evening playing games. Thank you Lindsborg for a much needed weekend for our family to all reconnect after a busy spring."
